The GOP shoots itself in the foot again

They had the opportunity to choose what’s best for the border or what’s best for Trump.
What's best for the border is to strive for zero. Nada. None. Zippola.
Now, that's not possible, but we strive for a lot of things in life that aren't possible. In this case, I'll settle for close.

The Senate bill institutionalized 5000 illegals per month.
Per DAY.
They are going to need all of them for the insurrection after Mr. Trump gets elected.
The Biden campaign is running a promotion where if you vote for him, and he wins, your name is included in a lottery where five winners get to man a 50-caliber machine gun at various federal buildings, to mow down insurrectionists as they come. And if you vote more than once, your name is added to the lottery for each vote.

Say, didn’t some of you folks say it would be better to have Congress pass laws than to have the President issue Executive Orders for immigration stuff?

Yup. Would be nice.
Now, what do you think the odds are that POTATUS would veto a GOP-sponsored bill?
What do you think the odds are that Schumer, et al, wouldn't filibuster it?

Newt
Speaker Mike Johnson just sent out an email which captures exactly what is going on in the U.S. Senate today.
He wrote:
“They want you to believe that the deal they’re offering to the American people is a ‘compromise.’
“[Sen. Chuck] Schumer wants you to sign off on:
“150,000 illegal immigrants entering the country uninhibited per month. (That’s nearly the population of my hometown in Louisiana)
“Work permits for EVERY illegal alien who’s been released into the country.
And they want YOU to pay for their legal fees.
“My answer is NO. Absolutely not.”
As I mentioned on my podcast this week, I am proud of Speaker Johnson’s firm position, but he is going to need a lot of grassroots support to convince Senate Republicans not to go along with this border sell out.
Americans want a clean, simple bill that controls the border and stops illegal immigrants from entering the United States. Americans strongly favor legal immigration, but they are worried about the enormous flood of illegal immigrants from more than 160 countries – including people on the terrorist watch list and criminals from dangerous cartels.
Closing Brooklyn’s James Madison High School so American students had to learn from home while illegal immigrants stayed in the school became a symbol of misplaced values and destructive Biden administration policies. In fact, the American people strongly support another bill, the Secure the Border Act of 2023 – which House Republicans passed last year. At America’s New Majority Project, we found enormous support for key provisions in that bill which address the amnesty and parole systems that are currently being abused.
The American people are increasingly concerned about Joe Biden’s illegal immigration crisis. The issue was the No. 1 concern for Republican caucus goers in Iowa – surpassing even the economy.
Further, in a brand-new poll by America’s New Majority Project, we found 77 percent of Americans reject non-citizens voting. In fact, 60 percent strongly oppose non-citizens voting.
The voting issue is a real election game changer. A Republican who is against non-citizens voting defeats a Democrat who favors non-citizens voting 56 percent to 29 percent (15 percent were undecided).
Finally, Americans do not want to open up the welfare system to illegal immigrants. In yet another America’s New Majority Project poll, we found only 29 percent support letting illegal immigrants receive “Medicaid, food stamps, and other help meant for people with low incomes.” Sixty-four percent oppose this (and 47 percent oppose it strongly).
These most recent findings by America’s New Majority Project reaffirm the results of other polls on immigration and border security.
Consider that according to Scott Rasmussen 73 percent of Americans believe illegal immigration is bad for America (similarly, 71 percent believe legal immigration is good for our country).
In a poll by the Trafalger Group, only 14 percent favor amnesty and citizenship for people who entered the country illegally or are seeking asylum (among Hispanics that drops to 3 percent).
The confusion among Senate Republicans is painful.
Many Senate Republicans start out seeking an agreement with Schumer and the Democrats. Such an agreement will be opposed by the vast majority of Americans.
Both President Biden and the congressional Democrats are committed to accepting illegal immigrants, finding a way to give them work permits, and ultimately letting them vote – even if they are not citizens. Some Democratic controlled cities are already doing this.
The Democrats’ goal is to make the admission of illegal immigrants a routine event. That will require paying their big city allies billions of dollars for taking care of the millions of Biden’s illegal immigrants coming to their neighborhoods. Then they will need extra money to provide health care for illegal immigrants (as California Gov. Gavin Newsom has already promised to do). Then they will have to provide work permits because otherwise we will have millions of people entering an underground economy with no legal means of earning a living. Finally, we will have to pay to educate millions of young people who have no knowledge of American culture.
The Democrat plan is designed to make illegality routine in an effort to get political power. But it will ultimately extend the reach of dangerous cartels, expand drug distribution, and increase local crime.
The American people want illegal immigration stopped – not made routine. They want the border controlled – not opened.
The left ultimately wants no borders, with no requirements for citizenship or expectations of work (note the disastrous proposal Congress is working on to reduce work requirements for the child tax credit).
It is impossible for House Republicans to compromise in good faith with values and goals that are directly opposed to the wishes of the American people.
Let Speaker Johnson and House Republicans know that you stand with them in opposing a phony border bill.
Let Republican senators know that the details matter, and a bill that regularizes illegal immigration is unacceptable.
This could be a decisive turning point in the crisis at the border – and the crises in our cities.
The question is who will win – the American people or the politicians?
You can help win this fight.

As I said in another thread, the Republics were for border control before they were against it.
President Trump tells them to lick his shoes, and they line up to do it.
As the Republican lead negotiator said:
During an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, lead Senate GOP negotiator Lankford noted some people were "functioning off of internet rumors of what's in" the bill's final text that's in the final stages, "and many of them are false."
Lankford noted the "internet rumors" during a "Fox News Sunday" interview during which he said the bill "focuses on getting us to zero illegal crossings" per day.
"There's no amnesty. It increases a number of Border Patrol agents and it increases asylum officers. It increases detention beds so we can quickly detain and then deport individuals," he told Fox anchor Shannon Bream.
"It focuses on additional deportation flights out. It changes our asylum process so that people can get a fast asylum screening at a higher standard and then get returned back to their home country," Lankford added.I think that Speaker Johnson is putting scare words as the below is not true.
[Sen. Chuck] Schumer wants you to sign off on:150000 illegal immigrants entering the country uninhibited per month.
As Mik says above, if the illegals reach an average of 4000/day for a week,
migrants who cross into the U.S. illegally would not be allowed to ask for asylum, and would face swift deportation to Mexico or their home country.

I think that everybody agrees that somethings has to be done on illegal immigrants.
BUT, kind of like the abortion issue, the Republicans "shoot" themselves in the foot. As you mentioned Jolly about the abortion issue, sometimes you need to compromise and my fear is that if the Republicans do not on this issue or continue to just blindly follow what President Trump says, it will come back to them on the elections. It will be a repeat of 2020 and 2022.

What does Trump say that you disagree with other than mass deportations? I don't believe that's in the GOP's sights.
If the 5000/day number is true, are you OK with that? If not, what number - 3000? 2000?
What compromise would you suggest?
Never lose sight of the fact that, on his first day in office, Biden signed about 50 executive orders undoing what Trump had done regarding the border.
And now, here we are.

Trump’s backed off the deportations thing. Though there are a significant number of people that would be quite okay with that, including the Democrat Card Carrying Unions…
-
The good Senator doesn’t address the workers cards. This at a time when job growth has been strictly limited to Governmental jobs that I would expect undocumented aliens would not be eligible for… Add on the insane rent increases along with general inflation? How do you even expect these people to survive without further opening up the public’s coffers? And we can’t afford it. There is not enough money. We are already at extreme deficit and it is growing.

What I am referring to is that President Trump has said he does not want a border deal this year.

I agree. President Biden made this mess 100%. But, he could say that he is going to put a border guard every 5 m, and the Republicans still would not agree to it. It is not in their political interest to have a border deal this year, especially after President Trump told them that.
-
The way I understood it, as portrayed on the news, it was not 4k per day for a week, but that was the total for the week to enable shutting down the border. That is untrue. The number is the average per day for the week. Thanks for distorting the truth, MSM.

Please play the clip where Trump said that. I'm having trouble finding it.
