I've had bullets come through the windows at work. I was attacked by a mental patient wielding a butter knife. I tackled a naked woman running through my workplace. I was in the ED the day they lifted a guy onto the gurney and pipe bombs fell out of his pockets and bounced across the floor. I saw one guy get riddled with bullets and killed in the driveway. I found a suicide in the parking lot. There's plenty more. Most days at work were just the usual grind. But some dark days were absolute shit shows. Kept the place interesting.
And even in my prime, I wouldn't be a San Francisco cop...

No, it's not the most appealing of careers. I'm not convinced offering more money is going to fix the problem. Money only works for so long as a motivational tool.

In 1977 my first was $12K, but dropped to $9K when I moved to Dallas - we had geographical COLAs, Boston was expensive, Dallas was cheap.
Could have gone to US Steel and made $30K a year running a coke belt.

That road's not going to lick itself clean, you know.

@Jolly who cares about the salaries, let’s hear more about you tackling naked women. Some people would pay to do that
She was a mental patient, probably in her 40's and had definitely gone around the bend. I heard a ruckus out front and could hear the secretary yelling at her to stop. When she rounded the Special Chemistry corner, I dropped her with a regular football tackle.
She was screaming and thrashing, so I just put my knees on her, same as you would hold down a hog. Richard, the head security guard, came around the corner just a few seconds later and chastised me for holding her down like that. I told him okay, buddy-rough, she's all yours and got off of her.
I propped up against the wall and laughed at him, while she tore his ass up. It took a couple more guards to pull her off of him.
Never cared much for ol' Richard...
