Used to be a place in town called Lasyone's. They made a barbecue beef poboy that was served on a buttered, toasted and pressed French bread. Bread was crusty and almost popped when you bit into it. The sauce had bite, probably with a hint of jalapeno or some other pepper. They'd serve it surrounded by curly Q fries. Worked well with an ice cold beer.

Man, you walk in that time-warp dining room, thumb a couple of quarters in the jukebox, park your butt in a red, naugahyde booth, and watch the gals swish by, while waiting on your food.

Don't know if life was better back then, but it sure was simpler.

Same extended family, different town, different restaurant. That one is in Natchitoches and was my go-to lunch place if I was feeding the sheriff, fire chief or the clerk of court (I did a lot of business in that parish and the restaurant is close to the courthouse).

It's still an old place, with its own ambience. They make a good Natchitoches meat pie or red beans and rice.

If you're eating in Nachitoches... Southern Classic Fried chicken. Not in the best part of town, but it's the original restaurant of a small chain. At lunch you'll see po black folk, college kids and businessmen all getting fried chicken.

Another fast food (but good) place is Peggy's. They make fresh pizzas from the dough up. Better than any of the chain stuff.

Mama's Oyster House down on Front Street is a good lunch place.

Lastly, supper would be at Mariner's, Merci Beaucoup or Maglieaux's. All are decent.
