I hate to sound like a snobby bastard, but is it possible the folk who rely on Dollar General a lot more are more likely to try pinching stuff?

I actually love dollar stores - they're fun to shop in, particularly with the kids, but frequently the people who are buying a lot of stuff there appear to be at least somewhat on their uppers.

Probably like most people, I like using the self-checkout at the supermarket for small volumes - it's good not to have wait behind somebody doing their weekly groceries if all I'm doing is picking up some eggs, but I much prefer using a manned till if I'm buying a lot of stuff.

      I was only joking

Some of the DG's in this district have shrinkage of $10k+/month.

Chew on that. It's mind boggling.

Let me tell you what happens at the DG self-checkout...The stores are so short-staffed (on purpose), the people working in the store are so busy straightening and stocking, they don't man the regular checkout unless you ring a bell. They don't have time.

So, some people are less than honest.

I'd guess they probably can't stay in business with those numbers.

They're running the stores on a shoestring, and they're pretty much guaranteeing crime with the strategy. There's a reason they need to hire people.

Obviously, it's also much less challenging to be honest when you can afford to be.

            https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/san-francisco-woman-stole-goods-target-19440348.php

Aziza Graves, 43, repeatedly visited the Target inside Stonestown Galleria from Oct. 2020 to Nov. 2021. Dozens of times, she took merchandise, went to the self-checkout area and scanned the items. Instead of paying the full price, however, she would put “a single coin or bill” into the machine and then leave, a press release from the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office said. Investigators from the DA’s office and the San Francisco Police Department caught wind of Graves’ scheme and began following her.
“She was observed selling her stolen goods at UN Plaza to sellers of stolen property,” the DA’s office said. “She subsequently began to sell her stolen goods to anyone passing by.”

Have to wonder what the relative losses from shoplifting/cheating are as compared to the cost of humans at the checkout.

I imagine that, 10 years ago, when shoplifting was not an issue, it was pretty simple. But with cheaters and stealers, I'd like to hear if that calculation has changed.
