@Jolly said in Rape shelter refuses "trans-women," gets defunded by government.:
And some of y'all want to keep Biden? And let that rot take hold here?
Actually it was imported here by rich kids who attended US Ivy League universities in the 1980’s and 1990’s then returned here to teach in our colleges and universities. The source of the rot has always been the USA not here or anywhere else in the western world.

At the same time, though, Canada's gone further with it in some areas than the U.S. ever has. They're the trailblazers now.

Because discrimination.
This was Rowling's sticking point—probably due at least in part to her own experiences with domestic abuse.
And so yeah they call her a terf for that.

Perhaps in metro Vancouver and Toronto, but not across the country. It’s regionalised and there is a mounting reaction to the extreme wokeness that has come to characterise both those urban centres. It is a developing reality that is quite lost on some politicians, particularly at the municipal level where they are most concentrated.

Sounds very much like here, Sleepy Joe notwithstanding.

In my decidedly judgemental opinion, 90% or more of this current woke idiocy resides at the community and municipal governance levels and quickly evolves into opportunistic and head nodding mimicry at regional and national levels where it is quite dispensable if the political situation demands abandonment. That willingness to discard does not seem to exist at the lower levels of public or even corporate governance.

That's the political side, which sounds right to me, but unfortunately I know more than I'd like about the social.
Used to be, juice wasn't really worth the squeeze when it came to being offended. Prior to cell phones, the odd old bitty would kick things up at the diner maybe, just to feel like she exists, but that's about it.
Smartphones changed all that. Outrage, it turned out, is one of the most fanable social flames to spread, and there are massive benefits to being first. In our world, well-timed outrage can make you famous. It can get your name in the paper. You're invited to summits and people come to hear you speak your vitriol. It's a fasttrack toward unearned notoriety and respect.
Or if you're just a low-end narcissist or sociopath, there's always that wonderful trifecta of anonymity, no consequences and a willful audience to play around with. Heck, some of those folks get pretty well-known, too.
Socially, it's as big a problem as Facebook, TikTok and X have followers. And the first generation of workers who treat online world as primary to reality are joining the workforce. There's a reason things are getting so weird.

Being the misanthrope I am, I completely overlooked the social. Your descriptive summary is both interesting and disturbing. It’s really not something I have had to deal with at any level, although I did see it creeping into the corporate world around ten or so years ago around the time I decided to go into semi retirement. At the time I just wrote it off to a generational shift in the make up of our Board of Directors and the ensuing direction corporate governance policies were going. My background told me to operate as a small business their direction was something other; to operate as public advocate and industry led facilitator of public concerns.

Well, fortunately, it's not the surprise it used to be when these things crop up. There is growing awareness and pushback. I think the ship's just starting to right itself.

I think so too, let reason over passion prevail.
I really disdain the mob no matter its ideological complexion.
