That's a hard thing to quantitate. They bring in more money to an area, as noted with Jerry's World (Cowboy Stadium). The stadium becomes an experience in and of itself. Even with a mediocre team. Another example would be The Black Hole in Las Vegas.
But do they bring in enough money to offset their cost to the public?

Are you sure you don’t mean threatening to stay?

When we lived in Foxborough we definitely noticed the benefit of having the Pats there - taxes were relatively low, and we had a bunch of new stuff being built - fire and police station, big upgrades to the library etc.
On the negative side, we had to put up the pick-up truck and loser-cruiser brigade coming into town in their thousands to watch the games and also stadium events, which often caused more disruption than the games.
However, Foxborough is a small town, and Bob Kraft funded 100% of the stadium. I'm not sure that a big city would notice the benefits nearly as much.

Do we need this?
Not just no, but FUCK NO! Taxpayer monies should be spent on more worthwhile projects, like...subsidizing electric cars.
