Theory X management gets Theory X employees.

When the economic downturn comes (and it will), guess who get fired first?
All fun and games until the company realizes there aren't enough people able to buy their bullshit anymore. Because by the way, that is absolutely happening sometime soon, too.

I think this is just an example of turbulence in the system. The idea of partial/fully remote working will sink in at some point, and we'll get used to a new equilibrium.
It's a bit like the war giving women the opportunity to work - the pandemic gave people a taste of remote working who hadn't had it before, and now there's the inevitable adjustment period for everybody as we get back to normal.

I think that's exactly it, and that's the analogy I often use to explain it.

But normal has changed. We will not go back to the old normal.
Yes, but we also won't go back to how it was during the lockdowns. Companies want to go back to 2019, employees want to go back to 2020. It's not going to be either.
Also, the idea that either side has all the power and can force through what they want is silly. There's going to have to be give-and-take. People or corporations who are unwilling to compromise will not succeed as well as those who do. Same as ever.
