Chinese Scam Camp and Modern Day Slavery

Harrowing tale of a Chinese national who was kidnapped and forced to work in a "scam camp" in Myanmar. It's a large scale operations run by Chinese gangs in cahoots with local militia and the scam mostly other Chinese nationals. Their "workers" are essentially enslaved, physically and psychologically abuse to keep them in check.
The evidence and many operational details reported in the article are supplied by one such "worker" who did accounting for one of the gang, and amazingly he managed to send information to the outside world (including the NYT) even while he was still in a camp.
Now rescued, the "accountant" says he will continue to speak out hoping to shut down these camps. He said he consulted for a movie that told the story of this is sort of massive scam operation. I think I have seen that movie a few months ago, just because a lot of stuff portrayed in the movie is so similar to what's reported in the NYT article.

Cant read the article, but have heard of things like that.
Similar "camps" are in Cambodia and Laos.
If you get a scam test on your cell phone/WhatsApp/LINE, etc that starts off like they know you, "Hey, haven't heard from you in a while. Just wanted to check and see how things were going." When you respond saying it is the wrong number, they will apologize and start to make conversation to draw you in. Eventually, they try to somehow get money.
A common one is investing in crypto. I was able to talk to one of the scammers for a while. They were actually based in Thailand and were trying to get people to invest in a crypto "wallet". They supposedly got 20% of what the person invested. They eventually stopped talking to me, but I was curious if they were in a "camp" or something else.
