If you have a consciousness, it's only natural to try to express yourself.
Only for a lot of people that stops early on because they learn expressing yourself is for self-indulgent wokes with pink hair and don't be like that.So then they grow up and they get on the freeway to get to a job they dislike to pay for the shit they bought to fill a void they aren't filling and to get away from problems at home they don't understand and they scream at some guy who cut them off without knowing why. They actually think it's because the other guy is an asshole.

I know why. It's because he's an asshole who cut me off.
Self-awareness is important. But it's more important to be aware that the other guy is an asshole.

Totally unrelated but what was your grade school's art department budget like?

It was fine, but I was told my paintings were awful when I was 5. That last bit's actually true. The fact that I very clearly remember it happening is interesting. I should pay for therapy so that I can blame everything on my primary school teacher.
Luckily for me, I had the opportunity to play a number of musical instruments at increasingly unpleasant volume levels. They might not sound good, but it does enable me to inflict my inner pain on everybody else.

Wow. You were 5, what a ridiculous thing to say to a 5-year-old.
Here's some fun society-wide cognitive dissonance for you:
Every single possible way to make, spend or transfer money throughout the world requires creative writing and visual messaging. Every single freaking thing.
And yet nobody gives a shit if their kid doesn't do all that great or even refuses to take art and creative writing courses. Nobody tells their kid, "okay, fine, you got that A in math but what's with this C in art? What's up with that?"
We're pretty damn good at scooping up the STEM stars. But there are shitloads of kids out there who suck at physics but could easily become successful videographers, illustrators, writers, motion graphic designers or sound engineers and don't because the world tells them not to take any of that stuff seriously.
And it's the other half the entire fucking economy.
