My wife's been working as a contractor for a bit. She started working for a newer place a few months back as a maternity cover for someone else. Things seemed to be going pretty well, and they were asking her if she would be interested in either extending her contract or staying on full-time, which she was down for.

Well, because of her job, she has access to others' emails. She also has to send emails on behalf of others from time to time.

So she sees an email today from her boss to someone else that's a bitch-fest about her and one of her co-workers. For the other co-worker, they're pissed he wanted to show up in-person for their annual meeting, because apparently that's "a bit much," whatever that means. Note that he wasn't cross about being told no, they're pissed he even had the presumption to ask.

And in that email there was a side comment about my wife's contract terminating. They never had any intention to keep her around, they've been stringing her along. But they seem to be implying it's annoying she's been asking about an update regarding this.

On the plus side, good for her, she now has a month to plan whereas had she not seen this, she would have believed they were looking into keeping her. She has at least a little bit of a head start. And sure, this was a maternity cover, nothing at all guaranteed.

On the other hand, man, what snakes. She's now got to pretend she hasn't seen the email. I know I couldn't do that. I'm only obliquely involved and I already went off on a tear about blowjobs and female genetalia as pertains to what I think of her boss. Something very similar happened at her previous place, too.

She is working on transitioning to nursing, but she's still taking preliminary classes. It's going to be tough finding work that can accommodate her school schedule.

    Fuck's sake.

    Please love yourself.

Being two faced isn't a bug, it's a feature, with corporate climbers. They rather enjoy the game of being human in the company of fellow status travelers, and then the power to be dishonest puppeteers, when providing messaging to the masses. It may or may not damage one's soul, but I lean towards not. Just apes being apes.

      Education is extremely important.

There are very broad sections of society in which this kind of behavior is the norm, sure, but it has more negative than positive consequences for everyone who makes that choice.

Not sure what you mean? I can't think of anything more personal than fucking with someone's employment by lying to them about it.

It would seem their annoyance was dealing with her asking about the status going forward. That’s troubling and a pain, but at least they weren’t insulting… There wasn’t anything along the lines of “how does she think we would ever hire her” in the email, right?

Yeah nothing like that, but because they told her they were advocating pretty hard to keep her on, and they felt confident they would be able to do so, she's changed her application strategy. She told them that she was taking classes, and wanted to know if her class schedule would be a problem for them. They said no of course not. That's a big deal because other places might have had a problem with it, so her bet was to try to stay on. Had she known that was a lie she'd have started looking elsewhere sooner.

I mean yes nothing in writing, so it's not like she hasn't been looking at all, just in case, but blaming her for taking their word on things would be fucking sociopathic.

Does she have to work remote or can she be on site? I might suggest somewhere like Costco. High quality place to work, flexible hours, good bennies.

Eh, the basic choices are remote, so she can more or less do 9-to-5, or in-person shiftwork.

Costco would of course be quite a step down from what she's doing right now but fuck it, she's in a transition, that's no big. She's looking at that and similar. It'd be ideal if she could stick to what she's doing now remotely, but that might not be possible, so Costco and similar is the plan B.

Is she on the BS or AD track? Check out working as a nurse extern as soon as she gets to the junior point on the former or past the first year on the latter. Probably could PRN that on the weekends. There are other jobs, such as a transporter or ward clerk, but the hours might not work.

Alternatively...Hospitals and healthcare systems will cover your tuition if you agree to work for them after graduation. Choose your hospital wisely.

Yeah, her plan is to complete her ADN, then work as an RN while she rounds out her BSN. Does that sound legit?

Like I said, after her first year, she might can extern. An extern is a nursing student, usually working with and under a nurse, functioning like a nursing assistant with maybe a bit more paperwork.

Right now, a lot of hospitals would hire her as a ward clerk, a scribe, an ER tech, transporter, admit clerk, etc. Be forewarned, a lot of those jobs don't pay very well.

Lastly, be aware of how tough nursing school can be, both in the classroom and in the clinical rotations. Keep y'all's eyes on the prize. Most programs will tolerate one non-passing grade and make you repeat the course. Two gets you tossed.
