Turnover

A total of 2,516 NYPD cops have left so far this year, the fourth highest number in the past decade
4th highest in 10 years? Sounds more like average turnover.

Certainly odd wording, but you could say the yearly turnover is already above average, with 10% of the year left.

Beyond that, the general gist of the article is not about this year alone, it’s about the incredible turnover since COVID. It’s very possible the 3 years that exceeded it were 2020, 2021, and 2022. Which would mean an incredibly high loss rate with nowhere close to normal replacement labels.

The same story in the Post last March.
However you count it, it can't be good for the city.

NYPD cops resigning in new year at record-breaking pace — with a 117% jump from 2021 numbers
The shocking stats show 239 officers tapped out in January and February, a 36% spike from the 176 who fled in the same period last year and a disturbing 117% jump from the 110 in 2021, NYPD pension data show.
That’s the highest number of resignations for the first two months of a year since 250 members quit in 2007 during a contentious contract dispute,
“The NYPD needs to be rebuilt from the ground up — it’s unfixable in its current state,” a veteran Manhattan cop told The Post.

The California numbers seem absurdly low.
