That's what a cajun (dude, he's got papers) friend of mine told me this morning. He's picking his corn starting Monday and is having a devil of a time hiring help.

He keeps one farmhand on the payroll full-time and hire part-time help for harvest season. Problem is, nobody wants to work. It'll take Ken a couple of weeks to get his corn in, then he'll pick his beans and finish up with his cotton...So it's not like a temp employee wouldn't get six weeks work, or better...But nobody wants it.

Which is around $10/hour, no OT, but they're working seven days a week, fourteen hours a day. That's over $6000 for six weeks work.

So 42 days of 14-hour workdays in a row.

It's a farm. That's how you work on a farm, come planting or harvesting season. You either have to get it in the ground or you have to gather it in. Crops wait for no man.

1000/week is less than unemployment after the $600 fed bonus.

                  Education is extremely important.

Not for a farm hand in LA.
