It's a wonderful film. Amazing story, fantastic cinematography and acting.

A real pity that the planned franchise failed.

"History Buffs" does a deep dive into the accuracy of the movie. Might be worth a watch before seeing the movie.

          It's an amazing movie.

But I mean shit it's worth watching just for the greatest in-movie pun of all time.

          Please love yourself.

            Agreed.

The books are great. The movie is good. Budget was $150M and it didn't do well enough at the box office.

But...In this type of movie, some of the footage and most of the interior sets can be used in sequels, lowering the cost. It was just too good to let die, but they did.

OK...you can't just let that hang there.

It's ruined if it's just told. The context between the two characters is really fun, too. Gotta just watch it. 🙂

Love the movie. Along with Lawrence of Arabia it’s one of my top favourites. Try to watch my BR copy every year or two around summer solstice time.

This past summer I finally dove into the books. Read the first seven novels in the series. Am absolutely hooked. Will dive into them again in earnest next summer starting with with No. 8, The Ionian Mission.

It's a great movie, especially for me being from a seafaring family.

It took me three or four attempts over close to twenty years. I am so accustomed to reading non fiction that it is difficult for me get into the rhythms and colourings of prose.

You guys read to much serious stuff. I've read all of Forester's stuff, all of the Aubrey/Martin books and the Bolitho series.

Never heard of the Bolitho series? Reeman sold over 30 million books. A bit about him...

I read all Forrester books as well - about forty years ago. Still have them. They were engrossing but not in the same way as O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series. The latter contains all kinds of allusions and references to other classics, events and period beliefs and practices contemporary to the story arc. I found myself often looking up references for clarification. I am accustomed to doing that while reading history and find it just as pleasurable and rewarding as the narrative itself.

I recall the Hornblower series as focussed on the main character and the story line of the moment. Makes for a straightforward read.
