Happened an little bit ago, but still interesting.

    https://thedefencetimes.com/2023/10/05/55-chinese-sailors-died-in-nuclear-submarine-accident-in-august-report/

Following an unfortunate capture of their nuclear submarine in a trap meant to snare British as well as the US sub-surface vessels in the Yellow Sea, at least 55 Chinese sailors died in an accident in August in the Yellow Sea, according to a report by the UK based newspaper, Daily Mail Online.

The Daily Mail’s report is based on a highly classified UK document, which suggests that the crew members met their unfortunate end due to a catastrophic failure in the submarine’s oxygen system, leading to a lethal lack of oxygen. The UK report, which is based on military intelligence, has a high level of secrecy.

Apparently, they turned the Wong way...

Wonder how they would spin that domestically. Not expecting any public disclosure, but what will they inform the deceased's families?

Exactly. And I am sure that the story never was even in the news. So, no need to spin it.

Does news like this make its way to the general population of China? Do people ever wonder what happened to their neighbor's son who is in the military, and never returned?

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

Their internet censoring is called it the "Great Firewall" and it is amazingly good. So, if someone searched for "submarine" + "accident", the results would come back with nothing, or at least nothing that related to a Chinese submarine accident.

I am sure that in the example you gave, yes, someone in a small town or city may wonder what is going on, but for the other 99.9999999% of the population, they will remain ignorant.
