Facebook makes friend suggestions. They title it “People you may know”, and it’s usually pretty good, I usually know them or at least have a lot of friends in common.

Who was on the top of the list today? David Chase, creator of the Sopranos.

I’m curious how their algorithm got that result.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Proximity is a big part of it now. If you, say, went to an event that had person Y there, and shared a flight beside person X, and Chase has been in proximity to or is connected with both those people, there you go.

        Please love yourself.

I haven't pay much attention to Facebook, I rarely look at it. But along the same line of "why do I get these on social media," I am more curious about "connection requests" I get on LinkedIn in recent months. I have noticed that more and more of the profiles that send me "connection requests" share these characteristics:

          • appear to be female
          • appear to be young-ish (20s and early 30s)
          • have degrees from well-known universities
          • have respectable job titles suggesting job functions in finance/investing, data science, or hi-tech
          • profile pictures showing whole faces clearly; generally clear, high quality pictures with good lighting
          • generally good-looking (subjective as that may be)
          • have faces and last names/surnames that suggest that they are Chinese

My hypothesis so far is that these are all fake accounts using computer generated (or otherwise heavily processed/manipulated) profile pictures and biographies. Most likely there are scams waiting for whoever respond to these connection requests. :man-shrugging:
