Huh Facebook?

Facebook makes friend suggestions. They title it “People you may know”, and it’s usually pretty good, I usually know them or at least have a lot of friends in common.
Who was on the top of the list today? David Chase, creator of the Sopranos.
I’m curious how their algorithm got that result.

Proximity is a big part of it now. If you, say, went to an event that had person Y there, and shared a flight beside person X, and Chase has been in proximity to or is connected with both those people, there you go.

I haven't pay much attention to Facebook, I rarely look at it. But along the same line of "why do I get these on social media," I am more curious about "connection requests" I get on LinkedIn in recent months. I have noticed that more and more of the profiles that send me "connection requests" share these characteristics:
- appear to be female
- appear to be young-ish (20s and early 30s)
- have degrees from well-known universities
- have respectable job titles suggesting job functions in finance/investing, data science, or hi-tech
- profile pictures showing whole faces clearly; generally clear, high quality pictures with good lighting
- generally good-looking (subjective as that may be)
- have faces and last names/surnames that suggest that they are Chinese
My hypothesis so far is that these are all fake accounts using computer generated (or otherwise heavily processed/manipulated) profile pictures and biographies. Most likely there are scams waiting for whoever respond to these connection requests. :man-shrugging:
