When Henry was 18, he had sex with a 16-year-old he met on a dating app who said they were 18 too. The 16-year-old's parents found out, summoned the cops, and Henry was charged with a sex offense.

No wonder the prisons are so full.

There should be a standard of difference in age past 14 or 15.

Kid a mile down the road from me went to prison. Same thing, except he met a 16 year-old in a bar.

Insane - there should be some discretion allowed here, similar to something like "try as an adult or minor".

If people are within 2-3 years of each other, especially as you get into the high teens, there should be some common sense applied.

Many states have the so-called "Romeo and Juliet" exceptions when it comes to age-based statutory rape statutes, meaning "statutory rape" does not apply when the two consenting youngsters' age difference is smaller than some limits prescribed in law. Still, many states haven't got around to passing any sensible "Romeo and Juliet" legislation.

Table summarizing different states' "Romeo and Juliet" statutes (or lack thereof):

Sometimes, the law really is an ass.

Oh my god, read the kid’s whole story. It’s horrific.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Where did Henry live when this initial crime happened? I kind of want to hear more of this story. Was it in the news, ever?

It is indeed horrific. That a judge would exercise his power in that way is obscene.
