Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey told the Scottish news outlet Edinburgh Live they were billed £17,374, or about $21,000, to fix their Tesla after its battery was damaged by rain last week.
"I honestly can't believe that this has happened. When I first got the call, I thought we would get a bill for £500 or £1,000," Bacigalupo told Edinburgh Live. "When they said over 17 grand — it's absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly."
J.D. Power quoted Elon Musk saying in 2019 that it could cost $5,000 to $10,000 to replace a Tesla battery but added that the figures were different in 2023. Recurrent, which reports on EV battery health, said battery replacement could cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000.
Bacigalupo and Hussey said that after being unable to start their vehicle and arranging to have it delivered to Tesla Edinburgh by a collection firm, they received a call Wednesday informing them that the battery was "damaged due to water ingress."
They said they were told the eight-year warranty didn't cover this and were asked whether they wanted to proceed with a repair costing about £17,500.
Rain damage? How does that even happen unless the battery compartment wasn't properly sealed?

Was the car in an accident sometime in the past? I could see that damaging the compartment and voiding the warrant. Or perhaps the compartment was improperly closed after some service in the past? Especially if it wasn’t Tesla performing the service? I can see multiple possibilities.

He should post about this on Twitter, sorry X.

Additionally, he pressed the Tesla service representative on the phone, claiming that the he was told that it was a weather issue.
“They said that the battery is effectively submerged in water. How can that be our fault?,” said Bacigalupo. “After finally getting to speak to a manager, he told me it had water in it due to the fact the weather in Scotland has been so bad. That was the issue. They said it’s not necessarily my fault but it’s not Tesla’s to pay under warranty.”..
According to Tesla’s own documents detailing terms of its new vehicle limited warranty, the “Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty” does not cover what they call “Flooding the Battery.” In the document, Tesla does not dive into any details what constitutes a “flooded battery,” nor any explicit types of scenarios or situations that their vehicles may face that they do not cover.

What a bunch of shit-heads. The weather in Scotland was so bad. Of course it was fucking bad, it's Scotland!
If your car can't handle the rain, then it shouldn't be on sale.

Speaking of cars and water, here’s a weird one for you…A few weeks back (right after the three days of steady rain) I went to put on my seatbelt and as I was pulling on it water started gushing from the housing! Like 1/4 of a cup! I thought there might be a leak in the door seal, but it turns out there’s no door seal directly above it. It site between the front and back, and is actually above the level where the doors close and seal. I checked the roof and can find no signs of a leak (and can’t imagine how one would form there).
