Woodpecker stash

We have lots and lots of woodpeckers. I just saw one big redheaded one doing something I'd not seen before.. He's stashing nuts in the slots of our split rail fence. He was quite meticulous about it too, finding just the right slot after rejecting several.

Now he's doing another one.

Do woodpeckers migrate or do they stay around the winter in the colder climates?

Most of them stick around.
