I have heard the name, but dont really know much about her.

Mary Lou Retton, the first American woman to win all-around gymnastics gold at the Olympics, is "fighting for her life" with a serious illness, according to a fundraiser posted by her daughter.

McKenna Lane Kelley said her mother has "a very rare form of pneumonia" and is "not able to breathe on her own." She said Retton has been in the ICU for more than a week and is not insured, but declined to go into further details.

(Not to take my own thread off the track, but wow, why dont you have insurance?)

In this country it is not due to a lack of money. The government will pay for insurance for anyone who can't afford it.

The only way a person cannot be insured is because they don't want to be insured.

Exactly. That is what I dont understand. Unless you are Bill Gates rich and can self insure.....

There are stories that appear in the Thai news fairly commonly about expats that either suffer a medical condition or are in an accident and there is a fundraiser to raise money to pay for their medical costs because they dont have insurance.

There are limits on insurance, very expensive treatments may not be fully covered.
