The extremely hot weather that has hit much of the southern part of the continent since April is taking a toll on olive trees. CNN reports that olive crops are feared to be low for a second consecutive year as trees drop their produce early to protect themselves against the heat and droughts.

As a result, olive oil prices could skyrocket.

In July, the price was marked at $8,599 per metric ton ($7,800 per ton), a sharp increase from last summer when prices were half that amount. The next highest price noted by the bank was in late 1996, at more than $6,240 per metric ton ($5,660 per ton).

Haven’t seen any increase and I use almost exclusively olive oil. Unless you are putting it on food as flavoring raw, there are a lot of alternatives for cooking.

Frankly (I know, I'm a heathen) I really can't tell much of a difference if I'm cooking with it.

I don’t think there is for cooking. I think the difference is raw… Dressings and such…

              Ah...

A few years ago, I got a gift of 4 olive oils from "Olive and Well." They are wonderful on a piece of bread, etc. I always hesitated to use them for cooking. Good thing I did.

Olive oil has higher a smoke point than all other cooking oils, except avocado oil, and avocado oil is usually even more expensive than olive oil. So I use olive oil for cooking, that allows me to not worry about smoke point regardless of what I cook. Perhaps "wasteful" from some perspectives, but that allows to stock fewer types of oil and allow me to buy olive oil in bulk without worrying much about having to store it for too long. Whenever a local grocery store runs a discount on EVOO, I stock up, and that's typically all the inventory management I do for edible oil, be it for cooking, dipping, or salad dressing. I stock up on avocado oil too when it goes on discount but it's much rarer to find avocado oil on discount. Avocado oil is also less versatile in that it does not smell or taste as good for dipping or salad dressing. :man-shrugging:

I like to cook eggs in EVOO. It’s pretty low heat so the flavor remains. I put it on toast instead of butter sometimes too.

I have avocado oil too, but only for high heat cooking.

Ever do 'em Basque style? Use a little more EVOO, bring the heat pretty damn high, then dump in the eggs and they're done in about 20 seconds. Very light, don't burn. Might have to get some of the oil off if you're not a huge fan.

                      Please love yourself.

Yes, I fry them gently in oil.
