In a way it is good. She will have no chance in November 2024, so everybody running will be starting from the same point. It would have been an advantage to that person if they were appointed and were also running in the next election.

Reportedly that’s a large part of Newsom’s calculation; he does not want to tip the scale for any candidate who wants to run for that seat in 2024, so he picked an “outsider.”

Who says anything about altruism? It's quite likely Mr. Newsom has selfish reasons to not appear to tip the scale for the 2024 election at this time.
