No excuse for Fetterman’s total lack of decorum or ignorance of protocol, but it’s quite possible that he actually thought he was dressing “business suit” or at the very least, “business casual”.

In any case, it’s just very bad manners and boorish to present himself that way.

            Elbows up!

In a sort of related note, I recall the reluctance of Iranian political leaders to wearing neckties - they called it a callback to Western supremacy. This must be in the early 1980s or so.

Now, it's common to see the lack of neckties on television hosts.

Which reminds me, there was a pediatric surgeon who insisted that everyone on his service wear a necktie on rounds. One time, a hapless medical student came to rounds with an open-collared shirt.

"That is the UGLIEST neck I have EVER seen in all my years! I will NOT ever see it AGAIN, is that right?"

                "No sir, you won't..."

                (It was not me, btw)

The guy who did my jaw surgery wore Birks and a Grateful Dead t-shirt. Despite this terrible and unfortunate drawback, the surgery went well.

                  Please love yourself.

It was more than reluctance, it was outright refusal and it extended down to government officials and industry managers. In the late 90’s I once attended an official dinner hosted by our Minister of Energy in honour of the visit of the Iranian Ambassador and senior management officials from Kalnaft, the Iranianian state oil company, to Calgary. None of them wore ties just dark suits with top buttoned up white shirts. I think all had beards as well.

                      Fetterman smiled.

                      In the comments:

I cannot wait for Senate hearings with someone wearing a tank top, track pants and some Crocs.

Sweet. Pajama Day in the senate

ALL THE GOP SENATORS SHOULD SHOW UP IN TOGAS!

If a lawyer came into court wearing business casual around here the judge would be in his checkbook

                      Birkenstock Fridays?

                      Thong Thursday!

                      And finally....
