Pseudoephedrine HCl - Mrs. Phibes swears by that stuff. The other stuff she swears at me when I get it by accident.

    I was only joking

It works, but too speedy for me.

I can't find anything about the effectiveness of oral phenylephrine wrt nasal congestion. I also never understood the rationale of using an antihistamine when the cause of the congestion is not allergies.

But yeah, pseudoephedrine is an effective drug.

Aside: I used intravenous (real) ephedrine in the OR all the time.

The drug in that picture might be called "Sudafed PE," but it is not what "Sudafed" was back in the dark ages.

          Look at the ingredients:

          Screenshot 2023-09-09 at 7.20.42 AM.png

          • phenylephrine (Neosynephrine is the trade name)
          • paracetamol (aka Tylenol)
          • chlorpheniramine (aka Benadryl)

          "Sudafed" used to have pseudoephedrine.

          Screenshot 2023-09-09 at 7.28.40 AM.png

It is closely related to ephedrine, a drug which has effects similar to epinephrine. Either pseudoephedrine or ephedrine can be, with the proper chemistry set, be converted to any number of illegal stimulant drugs.

          Screenshot 2023-09-09 at 7.27.01 AM.png !

Looking around, "Sudafed," the real stuff is still available. Not only in it's real original form, but also in a host of other medications:

          Zyrtec
          Muscinex
          Clariten-D
          Aleve-D

And others - at least as of the time that Wiki page was posted.

Mucinex would have to be a variant. Regular Mucinex is Guaifenesin (which used to be plain Robtussin. Try to find the plain stuff anymore...)

Don't remember exactly which year, but years ago the pharmacies started checking state issued picture IDs and taking down names of people who buy Sudafed (the real thing with pseudoephedrine). First time I encountered that new process I asked the storekeeper why that is and was told that because people are buying Sudafed to extract its ingredients to make illegal drugs, they tightened control for the selling of Sudafed. I was also told there was a limit for how much Sudafed one can buy per checkout and how much one can buy cumulatively in a time period (I don't member what the limit is), that's why they take names to track how much each individual buy.

We used to drive across the border to by the real Sudafed in Washington State. It was behind the counter at a pharmacy, and we had to show our Oregon ID. Now we are like all the big kid states' - we show ID and must adhere to the limits. I do wonder what that type of oversight costs, and I also wonder if there are now different ways to concoct speed.

FDA Advisory Committee voted unanimously against efficacy. It's almost certainly getting pulled.
