Actually it's not a mask. It's a bite block. Keeps the tongue out of the way during the 'scope and prevents the patient from biting down and potentially damaging an expesivie piece of gear.

      Weirdo.
We had a RT who used to teach NG insertion by doing it on herself. That was weird too.

"Cardiac catheterization was first performed when Werner Forssmann, in 1929, created an incision in one of his left antecubital veins and inserted a catheter into his venous system. He then guided the catheter by fluoroscopy into his right atrium. Subsequently, he walked up a flight of stairs to the radiology department and documented the procedure by having a chest roentgenogram performed.[3] Over the next year, catheters were placed in a similar manner into the right ventricle, and measurements of pressure and cardiac output (using the Fick principle) were performed."

My gag reflex is triggered uncontrollably the moment any offal meat or a medical throat swab enters my mouth. It’s as if I have some sort of force field in place.

              I wonder if it’s genetic?

I doubt whether even Dr. George could get a clean tonsil swab off me.

They use them for bronchoscopies too, at least if they use the oral route rather than nasal.

                  Oh, I could.

It would just require succinylcholine the proper medication.

True story of when I first met the husband-to-be .. he was a clinical clerk on a general pediatric ward. We nurses would often put the young ones through all types of grossness just because .. So we had my husband-to-be do a nasal pharyngeal swab by auger. Back in the old days it was a one person procedure which required the simultaneous restraining of the baby/toddler while inserting a tube into their nose, down near where @Renauda gags, then using your own mouth to suck on another tube to get the snot up into an attached specimen bottle (I’m sure the procedure is less primitive now). But, the husband-to-be did it without complaining.
