Like most every company, our company has a long and proud tradition of putting up blocks of wood to proclaim our prowess in our chosen field. They request that these blocks of wood be prominently displayed to show our clients how fortunate they are to be working with us as opposed to our competition with their puny number of blocks of wood. These blocks of wood come in various categories -

Individual: Monthly and Annual Blocks of Wood to proclaim your standing against your peers within the company. There also can be individual blocks of wood that recognize individual achievements by manufacturers, including officially worded certifications that are very official. There are also awards for individual performances in leading a team on monthly and annual basis.

Group: Monthly and Annual blocks of wood proclaiming the prowess of your team vs other teams within the same corporate structure, averaged against goals and expected performance standards. There can also be awards of appreciation provided by local schools and civic organizations on a local level.

Corporate Awards: Blocks of wood presented by manufacturers recognizing achievements and accomplishments by the company. There are also blocks of wood by various media entities and larger civic organizations proclaiming our worthiness…

So, over decades of constant success, many many blocks of wood have come to adorn the walls of this store and frankly, I’m tired of looking at them as they represent a potential for catastrophic failure of the walls due the number of holes drilled into them and the many thousands of pounds bearing down on them.

So I’m chucking a lot of them… Personally, I try to keep my walls down to the last 3-4 years. I don’t need stuff from 20 years ago hanging up there, but the store and corporate awards are a little harder to decide on… I don’t think we need the store monthly awards from 10 years ago, but the annual? Yeah, that seems appropriate. But what about annual awards from 20 years ago? 30? Are they applicable today? What about civic groups? Should I still be hanging awards given by a local teaching organization from 2008? Is it appropriate? What about awards from manufacturers that are now our competitors?

Personally, I’d like to Chuck the lot, but Karla constantly points out that I’m an emotionless dick, so I thought I would ask for your input.

Digitize and chuck archive the original.

The digitized versions (e.g., digital photographs of older plaques) can then be displayed on a video screen in a rotating fashion if you still want to show off the long history of successes.

Where are these displayed? Are they hung all over the place randomly, or in your office? I'd like to be able to visualize what you're talking about.

Are the people honored still there? If not, out they go.

Disclaimer: I had to convince MFR to dump her large collection of awards.

I received my own block of wood from a previous place of employment. There was this minor presentation thing for the block of wood in which I thanked everybody.

That afternoon I happened to have run over it with my car in the parking lot a couple times, totally by accident.

              Please love yourself.

The personal ones go in the office or by the desk of the associate. The corporate/store go out in the showroom at several strategic points.

You could re-hang them in unexpected places such as the bathroom. A friend of mine had a photo of his dad escorting Prince Charles around a factory hanging up in the downstairs toilet. It means you still get to boast about it, but you do it in an ironic fashion.

                      I was only joking

That reminds me...someone taped this on the inside of the door of one of the bathrooms at work.
