Something I've mentioned before...
The P-47 was very good in the ground assault role (along with the Corsair). Radial engines can absorb hits that would down in-line motors like the Merlin. And those 50 caliber guns were effective, along with the rocket package carried on many of those missions.
The USAAF found that young pilots made the best ground attack pilots. Brave, almost foolhardy, it was not an unheard of sight to see a young pilot flying a P-47 underneath power lines at full throttle, guns blazing.
