Elgin Symphony is looking for a few good players:

    Orchestra Auditions

    • Principal Oboe, September 25 - Audition Information
    • Assistant Principal Violin II, September 26 & 27
    • Sections Violin I & II (4 positions), September 26 & 27
    • Section Viola (3 positions), September 28 & 29

To receive more information about a posted audition, please click on the above links. These links include audition and application information as well as the required audition repertoire. The ESO is located approximately 40 miles west of downtown Chicago and performs approximately 66 services per season which runs from September to May. 2023-24 season section scale is $154.26 per service (Principal scale $200.53, Assistant Principal $177.40). All positions receive mileage and 13.189% AFM/EPF.

$155 "per service"? Seems hardly worth it, unless that includes rehearsals as well - but even then.

Small community orchestras like that are primarily filled with teachers that still want to perform strictly for the sake of performing. Making an extra $10K per year is strictly a bonus.

I have 2 friends who sing with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus. One gets paid, the other volunteers. You can’t tell which gets paid from the audience.

People have offered to pay me $155 not to play.

Only the conductor gets paid in our local symphony. The players volunteer. The majority are teachers and doctors.
