    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ford-patent-self-repossessing-cars/

In a statement, Ford said that company officials "don't have any plans to deploy" the technology described in the application.

    Yet.

Not that different from the kill switches that used car dealers install.

I installed a simple kill switch on my 66 Mustang. If a car thief didn't know where under the dash to reach, he could turn the key all day and do nothing more than run down the battery. But, if he knew how to open the hood, and knew where the circuit was likely interrupted, well then it becomes Frederick Taylor territory i.e., how long is he willing to fiddle around with what size screwdriver before I have Jolly come up and shoot him.

@jon-nyc seems like a slightly more sophisticated version of this is all you need. (Location and lock-out). The self-driving part is just showing off.

The self driving part is installed for criminals who want to steal cars by remote control.

Or for the Chinese, when they invade they can send all our cars to their encampment. Where they will be loaded up with high-explosives and sent back to the owners for detonation.

Of course we will be ready for them and detonate the cars when they get to the Chinese encampment.

Or Ford could have mobsters hack all the cars and drive them off a cliff. That will drive up demand for new cars.
