But the white knight will block the black queen from putting white into checkmate.

The board’s upside down. F2 is white’s KB2 in the old notation

B-e3 wins. White has to give up the Queen. If Rxe3, then Q-h1 followed by Rxf1 mate.
I looked up the actual game online because I'm a saddo, and black actually played R-f2, which wasn't the best move, but black won anyway after white blundered with n-d3
