I had no idea that was a "thing" until I tried pumping my own gas in Portland, back in 2014. Attendant came running out, "You can't do that!"

Up until just a few years ago, you could not pump your own gas in Taiwan. I always thought it was kind of goofy.

Surprisingly gas is pretty cheap in NJ too. They don’t tax it all that much

Lower gas delivery costs I think is why they feel they can get away with it.
Kinda makes sense, though. New Jersey is on the way for a shit-ton of people every day. Give travelers an incentive to stop and they'll invariably spend more money.

Sometimes they reflexively answer before getting slightly offended.
