The problem was wear on the rotor and the housing. It would get to the point where you'd have combustion leakage at the point of contact, causing a loss of power and necessitating a rebuild earlier than a piston engine.
This thing works a little bit differently and fires under compression like a diesel. They say they've solved the wear problem, which I doubt (but that's a guess).
