A Farmers' Nightmare
-
In early July, farmer Jeremy Storey dropped off an order of eggs at a restaurant's back door as planned and continued on his way.
But six hours later, he got a call from the building's landlord that the eggs were never collected — the restaurant had suddenly closed because a staff member tested positive for Covid-19, and nobody canceled the order.
After half a day in the hot sun, the eggs could no longer be eaten. So Storey drove back to pick them up and took the loss.
"Half the restaurants we're going to now, we find out upon delivering to them that they're closed," he said. "A lot of times I'll pull up to restaurants and I'll just have to read the sign on the front door whether they're open or not."
He's now sitting on a surplus of about 24,000 eggs, he estimates. And he has no idea when, or if, things will stabilize.

The world has changed.
One of the things I find interesting, is the explosion of videos on YouTube about basic cooking, vegetable gardening and food preservation. People who didn't know how to boil water can now do a bit of cooking.
COVID has hit the restaurant business very hard. Fast food, not quite as much. I'm afraid that even with a vaccine, sit-down dining has taken a permanent loss.

Somewhere I read a story saying that 90% of private restaurants will never reopen. It will all be chains.

Ugh. I'll be eating at home. George, how are the restaurants you have been using faring?
We use Doordash for our not-cooked-at-home meals. Every place is open, for now. The sit-down places in the neighborhood are all outdoors, with spaced-out tables and masked staff. We haven't eaten "in" a restaurant in months.
