The root problem comes before the students are admitted to college. Not every Asian person is coming from a rich family. I would say that there are many (probably the majority) that are not rich: the SEA convenience store owner in the inner city, the Korean dry cleaner store owner, the Chinese take out restaurant owner, the Vietnamese nail shop worker, etc. They just prioritize education for their kids.

And excellence from their kids. I was watching an interview with actor somebody Hsu, daughter of Taiwanese immigrants. She talked about how her parents and the parents of friends emphasized that the kids HAD to excel to succeed here. This one thing is the key difference.

My wife joins wechat groups for networking as she tries to find a job. Just today she met a chinese woman who went through the same UX Design training program my wife did, and got a job, last year. This lady invited my wife over this afternoon to help go through her resume and help her find a job. Not the first chinese lady who's reached out to help her. That's what a high functioning culture looks like.
