What is the best free online language course?

I’ve used duo lingo and it seems fine for what it is, but to date I’ve used it as refresher not learning from scratch. I completed the Spanish course and am a few weeks from finishing the Portugese.
I’ve thought about trying to use it for Romanian (gf is Romanian) but haven’t yet. That would be a brand new language for me.
By the way I pay for the premium because I don’t like the ads.

What level is your Spanish? If you have some under your belt there are lots of Spanish language podcasts, some for learners and of course many general interest ones.
I listen to Radio Ambulante from NPR. It's NPR-style human interest stories in Latin American Spanish. BeeLady next door has raved about "News in Slow Spanish", designed for learners.

Other than Duolingo, what do you recommend for free online learning for a beginner?
You may want to check your library. Some of them have group licenses for different language programs that are free for users of that library.

I just thought of something else. There is the Foreign Service Institute language courses, which are used to train US diplomats. Super intensive and you have to be willing to put time into it, but they are quite effective.
