I may have posted something like this before, so forgive me.

Each pistol is single-action and has 5 rounds.

You don't know what horse you'll get.

Training the rider and horse at the US Cavalry school.

The training of the horse is amazing - they get a treat after every gunshot.

And even persons with two X-Chromosomes can do it.

            Are they using wax bullets?

              Wiki:

"Mounted shooting uses black powder theatrical blanks with no bullet. Companies such as Western Stage Props, Buffalo Blanks, Circle E Blanks, Lonesome Pine, and Whitehouse Blanks manufacture certified ammunition for competition. These blanks were originally used in movie production and on the theatrical stage so that flame and smoke can be seen from the muzzle of the firearm. A slow-burning powder component of the blank can break a balloon target at a range of up to 20 feet (6 m)."

Just wondering, since somebody would eventually shoot their horse in the head.

I know a couple about your age, that compete in the Senior division of fast-draw. The bullets are wax and loaded way, way down.

About shooting off of a horse...Never seen this type of competition in person. What I am real familiar with, is deer hunting on horses. A deer doesn't spook when it hears a horse walking through the woods, so you get some thirty yard shots.

Guys (and gals) tend to use carbines. Lever action 30-30, 44mag. 30 caliber M1 carbine. AR-15 carbine (M4 style) in 300 Blackout.

Horses are trained to drop their heads and stand still, when you drop the reins on their neck.

                    Nothing like a well-trained horse.

I trained Simon to "ground tie." If I dropped the lead rope onto the ground, he would stand still, as though he were tied to the ground. I could walk away, and although he would look at me, he's stay put.
