@Jolly I enjoyed both of them too, but it has to be said they bore little resemblance to actual Sherlock Holmes.

Granted, but Downey did a good job despite not physically resembling what Holmes should look like. Also, Jude Law played Watson in more of what I thought the character actually should have been. I don't think Holmes could have tolerated a bumbling sidekick and flatmate.

You missed some hellatious cinematography. The first is better than the second one. Park your brain at the door and enjoy the adventure.

I dunno. There is quite a bit of Victorian and Edwardian cleverness written into the movies.
They may be action movies, but that's not all they are. They couldn't be, and make $524M for the first film and $543M for the second.
Of course, you could stick to cosplay in the Marvelverse.

That's not a bad way to put it. I liked the movies OK, but, as others said, they were not Holmes like in the books.
You used to be able to get the entire Holmes collection for free on Kindle.
Now they jacked the price up top $1.99! Darned inflation.

I thought the "Sherlock" television series on BBC (I think?) with Benedict Cumberbatch was very very good.
I have not seen any of the movies you guys are talking about above.

If you care to skip through some commercials, both Robert Downey movies are on YouTube for free. You do need to watch them in order.
The Jeremy Brett tv series are also on YT. I think his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is the best. Hunt a bit and you'll find them.
The other must see Holmes are the Basil Rathbone movies. He also does a good job. Can't stand the Watson character in those. Too bumbling and slow-witted.

It's nice to know that Watson finally gets some love.

Jude Law portrays Watson as an intelligent man, just not in Sherlock's league. Watson has a slight limp from an old war injury, but is otherwise physically fit. He has a gambling problem and gets a little lively when he's had too much to drink. Watson has a temper which shows up in a fight and he is proficient in the military firearms of the day (Webley revolver, Martini rifle and Mauser).
Much of the tension in the second movie revolves around Watson trying to get married and create a new life, while Holmes keeps drawing Watson back into his adventures and eccentric lifestyle.

I liked Martin Freeman's portrayal of Watson the most of the ones I've seen. His frustration and exasperation with Holmes is very funny and understandable, and he's by no means played as being a dummy. I think the old Basil Rathbone movies made a mistake in portraying Watson as a bumbling idiot.
I've got the entire Jeremy Brett ITV series on DVD. It's wonderful - Brett really became quite obsessed with the role, by all accounts.

He was in the show that I watched. He was quite good also.
