Did they talk about the complete and total devaluation of English majors in the job market, which is wholly independent of the woke problem?

Which I do not understand. My ability to communicate in writing has been key to my career success. My daughter, an English and Theater Education major in her undergrad, defended her masters' thesis yesterday. They said it was the best written one they had ever seen in that program.

Maybe they want us all doing l33t speak because it's less expressive.

SHHHHHH c'mon man, keep it a secret then why don't you?

I wasn't an English major. Strictly speaking, my Master's was in creative writing with a poetry concentration. My wife's the actual English major.

It's not that words are irrelevant now, it's that that false conviction has never been stronger.

      1. Yeah, iPhones and short-form video helped kill it. (Guess who writes that shit, though?)
      2. The demand for practical skills, too, sure. (But multimedia skills are worthless when you've nothing to say.)
      3. Old white guy hate. That's a big one. (Too bad many of them were geniuses and reading their work offers unique insights into the fundamentals of the human condition. Wonder if that has any commercial value?)

In a way, I love the fact that no one studies English anymore. I get away with so much shit with the work that I do. What I mean is, I can act like myself. They don't know how I do what I do, so they let me be and get to it. (It's no mystery, I'm not special or anything. It's just that no one does this kind of thing anymore.) Effective written communication has gone wooey and shamanistic. It's kind of hilarious.

      Please love yourself.

As a technical report reviewer, I am still consistently surprised by just how dreadful the written English of middle aged, middle class white guys can be.

I was asked just last week to make something "more general by being a little more specific."

And most of these requests do not come from guys.

                      I don't think it's a gender-specific issue.

I mean I can't even explain process to anyone anymore. Not even in the most basic sense. From management to other departments, others' descriptions of what I do is incredibly hand-wavey, vague, and off the mark.

On the one hand it's kind of good, because it creates a lot of flexibility. On the other, it allows for charlatans. (Which I don't understand in a working world in which everything can be measured. I guess a lot of people don't bother.)

Effective written communication has gone wooey and shamanistic.

What do you mean by "wooey" and "shamanistic"?

He wears a horned Viking armored cap and shouts Wooey! a lot, as he vanquishes his foes. And foettes.

If I did, decent chance they'd put up with it.

                              Please love yourself.
