          Small miracle.

" . . . And while sharing the news during an April 18 press conference, he also revealed the cause behind the collapse that saw him rushed to a hospital: commotio cordis.

"It's a direct blow at a specific point in your heartbeat that causes cardiac arrest, and five-to-seven seconds later, you fall out," Hamlin explained, per the NFL. "That's pretty much what everyone's seen Jan. 2 of this year. Commotio cordis is the leading cause of death in youth athletes across all sports. So that's something that I personally will be taking a step in to make a change."

@Catseye3 the "R on T" phenomenon is what happens when a premature heartbeat occurs during a vulnerable portion of the cardiac cycle. The vulnerability is that the premature beat causes an electrical "storm" in which aberrant signals traverse the electrically-sensitive cardiac muscle, and rather than beating in a coordinated manner, random fibers contract at random times, causing the heat to cease pumping.

That premature beat can arise spontaneously, due to an outside stimulus (like a poorly-timed defibrillator shock), or...external blunt trauma.

I fail to see what "steps to make a change" will be effective other than banning chest trauma during football. Yeah, a head butt could have caused Hamlin's collapse, but there are other ways that this could have occurred.

@George-K "steps to make a change" : every player hooked up to an ECG moniotor broadcast to a booth in the stadium. any tackle on the T wave results in a flag and mandatory 15 yards penalty
