      The four stores.

      Crimes in the area:

"#5781 Chatham Supercenter, the Walmart Health center, and the Walmart Academy, 8431 S. Stewart Ave.

#3166 Kenwood Neighborhood Market, 4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

#5645 Lakeview Neighborhood Market, 2844 N. Broadway St.

#5646 Little Village Neighborhood Market, 2551 W. Cermak Road

The third one is about half a mile north of where I used to live. Not a bad neighborhood. The last one is in an "okay" neighborhood.

I wouldn't set foot or drive a car in the first two.

Yup, they are there to make money. I can understand the frustration of "normal" people who live in those neighborhoods who complain that there are no good stores close by for them.

But often, they blame it one the companies, which is the incorrect response.

If you want a Walmart, don't commit the crimes.

I dont like Walmart (but I did visit the Walmart museum recently LOL), but sometimes the stability of a large corporation in a neighborhood where there are little to no opportunities is something that should be encouraged.

Agreed. However, the City of Chicago has long opposed the opening Walmart in the city limits.

It's a relatively new addition to the shopping landscape of Chicago.

                    Advantages to Walmart?

                    1. Their pricing is very competitive. On a wide variety of goods. On some things, such as private label canned goods, it may be almost 50% less than a national brand.
                    2. Their Supercenters sell a wide variety of goods. Want to make one stop to buy your prescription drugs, a toy for the grandkids, a waterhose, a pair of khakis, a gallon of paint, a tv, a baby crib and a weeks worth of groceries? Go to Walmart.
                    3. Murphy Oil (the subsidiary of Walmart that owns the gas station part) has some of the best gas prices short of the warehouse clubs. I filled my truck up this evening for $3.08/gallon.
                    4. Jobs. They do bring jobs. Not always the best jobs, but if you want to work your way up, you can. Assistant Managers and managers do pretty well and benefits are competitive.
                    5. Walmart provides some banking services.I

                    Disadvantages to Walmart?

                    1. Customer service is not as good as smaller or more specialized stores.
                    2. They can be detrimental to mom and pop stores in a community.
                    3. Quality is fair. Be it fishing rods, light switches or womens intimates, it's going to be adequate, but rarely better or best quality.
