Don't listen much, but I tuned in this morning while driving. Really interesting guest, discussing JFK and hawking his new book.

Super interesting guest. Got into doing this stuff while writing exercises for medical students...Thought that if presented with the disease process of a famous person, the medical disease process and treatment might be remembered better.
A few things he brought up...JFK was a very sickly child and without the resources of his family, would likely have died. His family hired the best of physicians, he was an inpatient at Mayo Clinic for weeks on end as a teenager, and his medications and therapies were bleeding edge for the time.
They used dried bovine adrenal glands ground into powder and administered orally. In 1937, 17-hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone was isolated from adrenal glands and JFK received the hormone in pill form subcutaneously. In the 50's he received injectable cortisone.
