Having finished "Why We Sleep" (see the "What are you reading now" thread), I find myself fascinated by what happens when I sleep.

The importance of NREM and REM sleep is so fascinating - sleep isn't "rest," it's an important part of your physiology...

That said, I had the weirdest dream last night. I'm amazed that I still remember it, 15 hours later.

Remember, I retired almost 4 years ago.

It's 2AM and the phone rings.

    "Dr, K?"

    (Tries to wake up) "Yeah?"

"This is the hospital pharmacy and I have a question."

    "Uh...what is it?"

"Two years ago you gave anesthesia for a c-section."

    "Yeah, probably. What about it?"

"Well, you gave a lot, and I mean a lot, of Versed for that section."

"Uh, I have a couple of questions. First of all, why are you calling me at 2 AM? Secondly, why is this an issue two years later? Finally, why are you questioning what I thought was appropriate at the time?"

    Silence....

And that's all I remember, LOL.

According to the book, REM sleep is a way of your brain handling and reprocessing information in unique ways, making creative connections, reassembling thoughts in new ways.

What the hell was my brain doing in this dream, LOL????

I normally remember my dreams. Always have. Sometimes several.

But on the other night was quite odd, even for me.

I had a dream that a British friend was President and MFR and I were at a party with him at the White House. His wife and daughter were there too. The party was, as dreams are, quite surreal as the White House was not white and was in Springfield, Ohio. I did wonder how he managed to get elected, not being American born...

I just mentioned this to Mrs. George, in the context of REM sleep being a way of processing information, etc.

She wondered if my brain isn't trying to reconcile my "old" (working) life with my "new" (retired) life. It would make sense, because, as I told her, the person I was 5 years ago is not the person I am now. The brain is trying to make it fit...

            Does that make sense?

Yes it does. I never Ever had work dreams until I was ready to retire.

George, obviously your brain is sending you a message.

First, make sure you still have malpractice insurance.
Second, don't answer caller ID indicating "attorney at law"

Read some Jung, man. Dreams are interesting stuff indeed.

A fun observation: dreams, like emotions are always right and truthful. They don't ever lie to you. Now, they're extremely low resolution, so almost always we misinterpret them, but that's our very limited consciousness grappling with them. But they don't ever lie. Example: the common "teeth falling out" dream. In reality that would be an extremely anxiety-inducing situation, so it's likely something recently going on is giving you anxiety. That can be all it means sometimes. The emotion is truthful, but how it manifests can seem random as hell.

One thing that helps dream interpretation: don't read books on it, they're largely bullshit. It's not some formula where alligators = bad job situations, it's more like dreams are where emotions exist as a place. For example, back in the day, I used to dream about my uncle's apartment quite a bit. He lived there after he passed the bar exam, but never really unpacked, so there were boxes everywhere and the whole place felt temporary, not really a home, and a little unsettling. I felt like that for awhile, so that's where my dreams put me; it's how my subconscious depicted how I felt.

                  Please love yourself.

Basically your teeth fall out slowly, and it's both creepy and harrowing. I've had it a couple of times.

Yeah, me too! Usually something about I notice a loose tooth at first, then it goes from there to several teeth falling out. Lousy dream to have.

Sounds like a presentism dream to me. George is worried that his life might be judged by today’s standards and not best practice as he understood at the time. Or the fear that we all have that we made a mistake along the way that we didn’t know about until it’s pointed out and of course in that moment we knew it would happen.
