This is actually an underrated concern.

Hollywood and the NBA pale in comparison.

I assume the CCP understands that nobody, including Elon Musk, will be able to convince the world that it wasn't a lab leak.

We should just be thankful that the American left sees no political advantage anymore to shaming the idea away as a right wing conspiracy theory.

        Education is extremely important.

tl;dr: Horace has no opinion about the influence the CCP has over Musk due to his special arrangement with the worlds largest Tesla factory.

But he would like you to know that the left is bad.

More close to the point is that you have a psychological blind spot regarding the more real and effective deterrents to truth regarding a lab leak. Deterrents to truth that we actually watched in action, and which thankfully have now abated.

In fairness, you also consider right wing coups-by-legal-technicality to be an underrated concern. Your concerns tend come from a tribal and emotional, rather than a rational, place.

I remember when America's economic dependence on China, which is actually what we're talking about here, was something Trump was concerned about, and thus not a legitimate concern.

Of course I understand China has concerning influence because of that dependence. Musk is a famous person who gives a face to that concern, which activates some of us to finally think about it, I suppose.

                        @Horace

There were plenty of economic security concerns voiced in the US about dependence on China throughout the GWBush Administration. They were squelched out by the more obvious and immediate concerns surrounding Iraq, Afghanistan and Islamic terrorism. More importantly though as far as industry was concerned, doing business in China was profitable and, until very recently, the hope that through economic development and growth the country would democratize was the lodestar for business leaders and politicians. That hope is now understood to have been a delusion.

                        Elbows up!

Yes, the increasing reliance on China never occurred to me as I saw many of my long-term US and European customers close their manufacturing locations and train their Chinese replacements over the last 25 years. It was only Elon Musk that finally woke me up to this existential threat.

I’m sure it’s occurred to everybody. People voice their concerns largely through a political filter though. I doubt you were heard agreeing with Trump on the issue. Maybe I’m wrong.

Musk is a famous person who gives a face to that concern, which activates some of us to finally think about it, I suppose.

I didn't disagree with Trump's concerns about China. His approach seemed rather ham-fisted, as was the case with much of his Presidency. "Hey, let's put trade sanctions on them! OK, now let's do it to Europe too! Everybody's a loser except me!"

                              I was only joking

Ham-fisted is an understatement. Our the Minister of International Trade referred to it as absurd when he slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium because he felt they were a threat to national security. Thankfully it was US manufacturers who induced him to lift the tariffs when it became apparent that domestic supply couldn’t meet the demand and the prices for the commodities began to skyrocket.

Tump proved himself to be an unsurpassed mental midget in most of his international dealings. Clueless is the word.

                                Elbows up!
