I've never watched most of them, except for Deadliest Catch and some of the house renovation shows.
I thought the tax thing was pretty bad, especially on the Dream Home. I also thought it disingenuous on the Gaines' show that the houses were already bought before the couple made their selection, along with not refinishing rooms to keep within budget.

At our teenager’s insistence our Sunday evenings from November to mid May are reserved for the History Channel’s, The Curse of Oak Island and from September to end of October, The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch. I don’t find many of those listed to really be fake. Take the extreme home makeover controversy. A property makeover adds what? $50K to the property value? Maybe $100,000? That’s $500 to $1,000 more in taxes per year. Hardly a back breaker.
Far more likely? The financial difficulties and possible mismanagement that landed you in that situation to begin with doesn’t disappear just because your house is nicer. Far more plausible that they decided to cash in on the increase in value or still needed to sell because of their financial choices…
