        But it's interesting that you posted this today. The book I'm reading, the sci-fi by Adrian Tchaikovsky, has a relevant theme.

        Earth has terraformed a distant planet. It has unleashed a nano virus on the planet which greatly accelerates evolution. The plan is to deliver a colony of monkeys to the planet, let the virus do its thing, an in a couple hundred years, the monkeys will have evolved enough to build cities, etc and make the newly terraformed planet a great place for the human race to expand to.

        Unfortunately, the monkeys never make it to the planet. But the virus is still there...

        ...and so are spiders.
