"Gatekeepers" is a common term that I've heard, and used, for over 30 years. Gatekeeping doesn't sound new to me, but it's new to the kiddos, I suppose.

Next thing you know, the kiddos will think they've invented fondue.

Seems like it was always used to describe either those who control access to high-status institutions or those who define and maintain the Overton window.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

Some of our more elderly posters can probably remember when a Gatekeeper would escort you into the city, carrying a whale-oil lantern.

Aqua's internal old codger almost certainly can.

          I was only joking

            ZUUL the gatekeeper

Zuul (also known as The Gatekeeper) is a demigod and minion of Gozer, alongside Vinz Clortho.

As with me. Nothing new or novel about the term.

                Elbows up!

'Gatekeeper' was one of those awful terms that was used in management-speak a lot, along with equally annoying terms such as 'turnkey', 'bespoke', 'synergy', 'positioning', etc.

I can't really see the kids adopting these other words.

I'm thrilled to see that you guys are thinking outside of the box in your attempt to square this circle.

I know it’s a word that had a definition, but the iconoclastic usage is trending now with young adults. It seems to be. I was just curious if anybody else had noticed.

                          Education is extremely important.

Well, let's not get too excited. It's easy to shoot the whole wad on a dry run, but if you rush in prematurely you can end up with a real mess on your hands.

I have. It's being applied more broadly to "people who disagree," presumably because the youngsters using it in this way haven't yet the job experience to understand its actual meaning.
