Quite common (or at least used to be) that non-US airlines (Asian) were quite picky about female appearance.

Singapore Airlines is/was known an airline that was very very select in this area.

Even US airlines were quite picky about the appearance of their air stewardesses/hostesses/attendants. The US airlines just started to place less emphasis on looks earlier than the other airlines.
