All this tolerance for 'victimless' crimes will lead us straight to authoritarianism.

I have shoplifted. On my first separation from my husband I had no vacuum cleaner and my carpet got really groady and I had no means to clean it and ZERO money so I stole a scrub brush from a drugstore that cost 76 cents -- or would have if I'd paid for it. Also, same era, I stole a can of catfood because my poor cat would've gone hungry and, again, I had no money.

I experienced guilt on these occasions, but not a whole lot. Fuck 'em, they had more money that I did and I was already stressed enough, thank you very much.

Well, it's not like you were 'lifting Gucci makeup.

I'm surprised, but strangely proud of you. You took care of your cat. The brush, maybe not so much.

Knew a guy who was on the parish SWAT team. He was deployed to New Orleans right after Katrina...Right after, as in they were rescuing people in boats and arresting looters.

They caught a bunch of looters coming out of a local store business supply store and they arrested several of them. One guy had a laptop another had a desktop computer, etc.

One woman had a case of water. He asked her where she lived and was anybody else at home. He then dispatched another boat to pick up the perps, while he took her in his boat to get the rest of her family.

He told her to keep the water.
