How do they consume the water?

The water cooling systems that I used to work with were closed. The water circulated through a cooling and heating cycle. The system was sealed, there was little or no water loss.

Is the alternative to operate like a nuclear plant and dump used, heated water after it is used for cooling? In which case the water would somehow be returned to the environment.

Seems like they should be able to use the same water over and over again as long as they push it underground long enough to cool it again.

Like everyone else has stated, I would think it would be closed system. And even if it wasn’t wouldn’t the vast majority of the water be going back into the table anyway?
