It's time to harvest wheat. The crew spent today getting all the machinery staged..

Two combines, two big tractors, two grain wagons, and two 52 foot tractor trailers..

That’ll make a lot of bread for sammiches.

It's down some. Not bad though. The quality is higher this year, and quantity... this stuff is so heavy it's bending over..,

I heard some of the others saying little under 5 per bushel, but I'm going to store mine and sell it in December. I think the price might be better then.

Do some farms focus more on quality vs. quantity and tried to get paid for that? Is there any such thing as "premium" wheat? And is it a real thing, or bullshit?

The reason I ask is our family is baking more. Curious if you know what the "good stuff" is - or it's all relatively the same?

Any wheat needs you'll have can be taken care of at the grocery store. The flour mill companies will already have the sorting done for you, and they'll tell you what quality it is on the bag.

OK, so how do you store wheat until December? Do you just fill a silo and it doesn't go bad?
With hay, each year we stored 80 acres in the huge barn of course, but tossed quite a bit of salt on it to avoid spontaneous combustion if it was too green. I am married to the farmer's daughter, so I was just obligated to help over the years. Other than that, I know pretty much all I want to know about raising hay and cattle.
Lots of wheat harvested east of the Cascades, taken to barges on the Columbia river. Not too much grown west of the Cascades, too wet.
